If you create a data base of all the cybersecurity vendors in the world and add all the investors in each one, you also create a data base of all investors in cybersecurity. We recently enhanced the IT-Harvest platform for researching the cybersecurity industry by pulling in new data that doubled the number of investors we can track.
Here, for the first time, we look at the investor eco-system for cybersecurity.
There are 5,122 firms and individuals that have made investments in cybersecurity. More than the total number of cybersecurity companies!
But only about half (1,640) of the 3,302 cybersecurity vendors have received any investment at all.
The top 26 investors are:
Insight Partners is by far the most active investor in cybersecurity. A quick snapshot of its portfolio reveals it has made investments in eleven data security vendors, including Acronis, DoControl, and Anjuna.
Only six of the 69 did not grow in 2022. The rest are very healthy. You will recognize most of the names, like Wiz, Dazz, Tailscale, Abnormal, Semperis, Brinqa, SentinelOne, and Cycode.
Accel is # 2 with 46 companies in its portfolio. If you add the holding of various Goldman Sachs entities they come to 45. EASME is an organization that supports EU companies but I cannot find a website for it.
There are 103 investment firms with more than ten investments in cybersecurity vendors. There are 206 with 6-10 investments. There are 3,536 which only have a single investment.
So many more insights are possible with this data. Next up: scoring investors with a realtime analysis of their portfolio companies. What should be included in such an analysis?
